I’ve been running this blog for almost a year, the one you are on right now.

My traffic from Google is minimal. Ezoic says it’s about 17 sessions per month roughly, about 2.3%. Obviously some of those could be me.

Compare this to the traffic I get from Pinterest which is about 51.3% of my traffic.

Where I ended up ranking on the first page of Google was when I searched about adding ads to a Squarespace website. I ended up seeing one of my Medium posts right there that I created 2 days ago.

I had heard because Medium has a high DR it means it can be easier to rank on Google as a beginner blogger, well turns out true.

Personally I’ve really been enjoying writing on Medium. As a blogger it’s hard to know where to put your focus in and I’m going to explain how they differ.

Medium can pay anywhere between $10-90 per 1000 views. It has such a varied range because they can pay for interaction on your stories as well as views. It’s also possible for a post to go viral on Medium. Don’t really hear about that happening on Google. Pinterest can have viral pins.

Using an ad network like Ezoic on your website will earn you minimal at best to begin with. For example I’m earning about $5 per 1000 views per month, but as traffic increases so can the revenue up to $20-40 per 1000 views I’ve seen some people say. Niche pursuits say they get around $25 on this post. Engagement doesn’t matter with ad networks.

With the recent Google updates it can be incredible hard to get views organically from Google as it can be very hard to rank now. Where as Medium is it’s own platform with a large audience.

Both platforms you can promote affiliate marketing, digital products and services.

You have full control over a WordPress website but in 2024 I can see the advantages of writing on Medium.

I don’t know about the future of my blog, it costs a lot more to run a blog than I had hoped. Medium you pay your fee each month but you also get to read some amazing stories on a platform that is very clean to read on. There are no ads as it’s subscription based, which can make for more chilled out vibe. I’ve also found the community to be very supportive on Medium. I haven’t really felt that with my own blog.

There are many gurus out there saying that blogging in 2024 isn’t easy anymore because of the Google updates, but I think this result of seeing my post on the first page of Google gives hope that maybe there is still a way to get organic Google traffic.
