This guide will help you sort, donate, and organize your clothes without the overwhelm.

If like me your weight is fluctuating with midlife it can be a good idea when the season change to go through and find what does or doesn’t fit anymore. I have just done this and it’s been so good to move away the clothes that don’t fit so I can then know much more clearly what I can and can’t wear.

Before you choose your weekend to tackle your wardrobe, might be worth checking the weather. If you have air con or fan that can be useful as if you are trying loads of clothes on you don’t want it to be too warm. But at the same time being warm can be a great way to get clothing dry if you find you need to wash a load or wash any storage boxes etc.

Friday Evening: The Quick Prep

You do not need to start from scratch on Saturday morning. Use Friday night to set the stage. Gather three boxes or large bags. Label them “Keep,” “Donate,” and “Trash.” You will also need some cleaning supplies. A vacuum cleaner and a damp cloth are perfect.

Take your closet off your to-do list for the rest of the day. Just get your supplies ready. This small step makes the big day feel much easier.

To save money check charity shops for storage boxes or dollar stores. I was able to get some boxes and hangers from family members that didn’t need them anymore. This was to put away clothing that was for another season or some clothing that I really like but at the moment doesn’t fit me.

I tend to keep some clothing maybe for a year that if my weight changes I might end up wearing them again. This is up to you whether you want to keep a few items you really love but have grown out of especially if like me your weight is going up and down, I don’t want to have to buy a whole new wardrobe all the time.

If you need to clean them, I found the easiest way was to put them in my shower with some soap or disinfectant spray, warm water and a plastic dust pan brush worked really well to get in all the corners that might have gathered dust or dirt.

Saturday Morning: The Big Sort

Start by taking everything out of your closet. Put the clothes on your bed or a clean table. It might look like a mess at first, but this is necessary. You need to see every single item to make good choices.

Go through your clothes one by one. Ask yourself three simple questions. First, have I worn this in the last year? If the answer is no, you probably do not need it. Second, does it still fit me well? Your body and style change over time, and that is okay. Third, is it in good condition? If it is stained, torn, or worn out, let it go.

Be honest but kind to yourself. Do not keep clothes just because they were expensive. If they do not make you happy or fit your life now, they are just taking up space.

Put the items you do not need into your “Donate” or “Trash” bags. Aim to remove at least twenty percent of your clothes. You will be surprised by how much you do not need.

Saturday Afternoon: Clean and Measure

Now that the closet is empty, take a moment to breathe. This is the part most people skip, but it makes a big difference. Vacuum the floor and wipe down the shelves. A clean space feels fresh and inviting.

While you are cleaning, look at your closet layout. Do you have enough hanging space? Do you need more shelves? Think about how you actually get dressed. If you wear pants every day, they should be easy to reach. If you rarely wear suits, move them to a higher shelf.

If you find anything has got moldy this is the time to get some moisture absorbers and place them at the back of your wardrobe or draws. Be careful if children are around make sure they can’t reach them.

Sunday Morning: Put Things Back

Start by putting your “Keep” items back in the closet. Group similar things together. Hang all your shirts together. Stack your sweaters in one bin. Keep your jeans in one section.

Use simple tools to save space. Matching hangers make everything look neat. Clear storage bins are great for off-season clothes. If you have extra space, use the floor for shoes or bags.

Leave a little room between hangers. It makes it easier to see and reach your clothes. Do not cram everything in. A little breathing room keeps things organized longer.

If you are struggling to work out what you actually wear. What you can do say have the left side clothes you haven’t’ worn yet, but then put a divider in the wardrobe then on the right put clothing you have actually worn. Over time you’ll start to see what you actually like wearing

Sunday Afternoon: The Final Touch

Put your “Donate” bag in your car or take it to a local center. Do not let it sit in the garage. The sooner you remove it, the less likely you are to change your mind.

If you find that no charity shops are open on a Sunday around you, make sure to still put the bags in the car (if it won’t draw too much attention to your car, security wise). Set a reminder for the next day in your calendar you are free to take it to the charity shop so you don’t forget.

Take a photo of your newly organized closet. This is a great way to celebrate your hard work. It also gives you a goal to maintain. When the closet gets messy again, you can look at the photo and reset it quickly.

Keep It Fresh

Decluttering is not a one-time event. Make it a habit. Every time you buy a new item, try to remove an old one. Do a quick check every few months. Throw away damaged clothes and donate things that no longer fit.

A clean closet gives you more time in the morning and less stress. You will appreciate the calm space you created. Enjoy your fresh, organized closet!
