Is Blogging Dead In 2024?

I don’t think blogging is dead but I do think there are some serious things to consider when building a blog in 2024.

Driving traffic

If you are like me you might have researched ways to make money online and come across blogging.

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I’ll receive a commission if you purchase through my link, at no extra cost to you. Please read full disclosure here.

Then you might have come across how Google has decimated a lot of bloggers by changing their algorithm in the recent years.

When I started my blog I already knew that Google wasn’t going to be a reliable source of traffic, also that it could be very hard to rank for keywords against other sites with a higher domain autority.

This is why I used Pinterest to drive traffic to my blog and to this day I still get traffic to my blog from the pins I’ve made months ago. If you want to save time creating pins Pin Generator is an amazing platform for creating pins in bulk and scheduling them.

Consider which platform you enjoy being on and which one you can share links to your blog. Your audience also needs to be on the platform you are promoting.

Starting as a beginner

Which Platform?

If you are a beginner Medium can be a great place to start, it costs $5 to earn from it as you need to join the partner program but it’s quicker and easier than getting ad revenue from say a WordPress blog in my experience. There is a built in readers community too so your content can get more eyes on it organically.

From what I can see my traffic off the platform to my affiliate links or products is very minimal, but I will see how that goes. People go to Medium to read so they may be less likely to leave the platform.

I would still have a WordPress for these reasons: You own it, Medium could take your account down then you lose your whole business. You could drive your Medium account to your WordPress blog by linking it on your about page.

It’s also fine to copy your post from WordPress to your Medium account to get the best of both worlds. I’m trying to find a plugin to do this automatically.

Another reason is it can be a great way to show off your business as a main hub for your business.

Squarespace is a nice platform but it’s very expensive so I would stick with WordPress. I personally use Hostinger, the support has been amazing and it’s very affordable. They also have the option to build a WordPress website using a template now which can save a lot of time creating good looking website.

Medium you can start earning from “views/engagement” from the start but I would actually hold off adding ads to your WordPress blog which you can earn from views. You only earn a few dollars until you have very high amounts of traffic, and the ads can be quite distracting which could result in less clicks on affiliate links or your products. See below of what I would suggest first doing to earn from your blog.

Affiliate Commissions

Personally I love Benable. I can create lists, promote loads of products not just Amazon products.

It’s also a community platform so you can make commissions from people being on Benable itself.

The best type of affiliate commissions are ones that have recurring commissions each month.

It’s worth noting some platforms and like Benable you have to earn a certain amount before you can take out your earnings. At present on Benable it’s $80 so that’s why it can be a good idea to mix affiliate marketing with your own products. See below.

Your Own products

Products you can promote are guides (See my tutorial on YouTube on how to create an ebook for free on Canva), courses and services. Most platforms where you can sell digital products like ConvertKit or Beacons allow you to take the money straight out. Gumroad it’s $10 before you can take your money out.

This means while you are building up your affiliate commissions you could start earning money straight away from your digital products.

Ad revenue/Medium Partner Program

I recently started writing on Medium which is a blogging platform, and I was very surprised how quick it was to start earning money on there. To give you an idea it took months to start earning say $1 per month from ad revenue. I earnt that within 2 weeks writing on Medium. And my second month I’m earning more but there are some things to considering when writing on Medium versus a WordPress blog.

It looks like Medium earnings can be very up and down as they are dependent on if your article does well, it’s not just views like ad revenue. The partner program on Medium also takes in to account interaction on your posts so you need to be a little more social on the platform to encourage others to interact on your posts.

Medium posts don’t necessarily get pushed out for a very long time. This is why with a Medium account and a WordPress blog I would consider driving traffic from other places like Pinterest so traffic could be pushed for years to your posts.

I’ve noticed some people say only a few earn a full time income on Medium but then that can be the same for a WordPress blog. If you stick out a WordPress blog though it appears your earning potential can be much higher than say if you only used Medium.

On a budget?

I would start with a WordPress website. With Hostinger it’s $35 per year for one website. A domain can be very cheap up to maybe $15 for the year.

Use free the Canva plan to create pins and schedule in the Pinterest schedular for free.

Sign up to Benable for free and promote their affiliate links for free.

Integrate Convertkit Mailing platform for free to capture emails, you could set up a freebie to encourage signups, see my example here.

Conclusion

From my experience it is still possible to earn money through blogging.
