Here’s a list of must have kids art supplies that are fun, safe, and parent approved.

1. Washable Markers
Bright colours, easy to use, and even easier to clean off walls, clothes, and little hands. Look for non-toxic, water-based markers labeled washable, they’re a must have for mess free colouring.
2. Chalk
Chalk is great and one of my top choices as it’s the easiest I’ve found to wipe off surfaces and even if the dust gets on to the carpet it can be vacuumed up. It’s also great if you have an outside area that has concrete or similar as they can draw on the ground. My kid likes to draw tracks and garages so he can move his cars along the road and park it.
3. Crayons (Standard and Jumbo)
Perfect for all ages, crayons are a classic staple. Standard size works well for older kids, while jumbo crayons are ideal for smaller hands just learning to grip. They’re also mess-free and long-lasting.
4. Watercolour Paint Set
A compact watercolour set with a brush and built-in mixing lid is perfect for simple painting sessions. Just add water and paper, and kids can paint for hours.
5. Safety Scissors
Blunt-tipped, kid-sized scissors are great for learning to cut safely. Use them with construction paper, old magazines, or even straws for crafting fun.
6. Glue Stick
Glue sticks are far less messy than liquid glue and dry much faster. They’re perfect for paper projects, collages, and everyday crafts. Choose the kind that goes on purple and dries clear for extra fun.
7. Paper in All Forms
Stock up on plain white printer paper, colourful construction paper, and heavier cardstock. Having a variety of paper types encourages different kinds of creativity and structure in projects.
8. Stickers
From animals and shapes to stars and letters, stickers are a quick and easy way for kids to personalize their art. They’re especially great for younger children who aren’t confident drawing yet.
9. Wet Wipes and an Art Apron
Not exactly art supplies, but essential. Keep wipes handy for quick clean-ups, and use an apron or old shirt to protect clothes from paint, glue, and marker mishaps.
10. Recycled Materials Bin
A simple bin filled with toilet rolls, bottle caps, egg cartons, and scrap paper can turn into a treasure trove of craft inspiration. It’s also a great way to reuse and teach sustainability. Think of old boxes that can turn in to ramps for cars to go down or bridges.
11. Stick on chalk board
I have installed this on the fridge door, it’s great as it can be used over and over again, just get a wet cloth to wipe clean and they can draw again.
11. Optional Extras
While not essential, extras like googly eyes, pipe cleaners, glitter glue, stamps, and pom poms can take crafting to the next level. Add them in gradually to keep things interesting.
Final Tip: Keep It Simple
You don’t need to buy out the craft store. A small collection of quality supplies can go a long way. Rotate materials to keep things fresh and let your child take the lead, their ideas are often better than ours.
